US Lacrosse Washington High School Players of the Week (March 29 – April 4): Issaquah, Snohomish, Bellevue, Overlake players named

SEATTLE – Issaquah High School junior Jake Fritz, Snohomish High School senior Ryan McAlister, along with Bellevue High School senior Merielle Moffatt and Overlake School senior Ceci Votta were named by US Lacrosse as Washington High School Players of the Week for the week of March 29 – April 4.

Boys Division I

Jake Fritz
Issaquah, Wash. – Junior, Attack, Issaquah High School

Issaquah High School junior Jake Fritz was the top boys high school lacrosse player for the 20 Division I teams during the Week of March 29 – April 4. Fritz, who plays at the attack position, helped the state champion Eagles to a perfect 3-0 record in its road swing through Colorado high schools last week, finishing the week with 14 points, scoring 13 goals and 1 assist.

In Issaquah’s 11-5 win over Castle View on Tuesday, the 6-1, 175 pound Fritz scored 5 goals and grabbed a ground ball. On Thursday, Fritz scored 5 goals and an assist as the Eagles dominated Littleton High 13 – 4. He finished the week scoring 3 goals and added 3 ground balls in the Eagles 9-8 win over Columbine High School on Friday.

At Issaquah High, Fritz maintains a 3.38 GPA. A two-sport athlete, he played receiver as a freshman on the Eagles JV football squad. In lacrosse, overcoming obstacles is a part of the game. For Fritz, who just one week after winning the state title as a freshman, was diagnosed with Type I diabetes, a disease that he shares with his older brother – Eagles senior goalie Erik Fritz, the challenge is a part of life. In the community - like lacrosse, Fritz embraces the challenges of others. He was selected as a student leader among his teammates for Issaquah’s Friday Night Lightning program, which teaches the fundamentals and traditions of the game of lacrosse to local 3rd through 6th graders. Fritz also volunteers with his teammates at the Issaquah Food Bank. During the critical Thanksgiving weekend, Fritz and his lacrosse teammates assembled over 100 food packages for Issaquah families in need.

Boys Division II

Ryan McAlister
Snohomish, Wash. -- Senior, Attack, Snohomish High School

Snohomish High School senior Ryan McAlister was the top lacrosse performer among the 29 Boys Division II high school teams in eastern and western Washington. A two-sport athlete at Snohomish, McAlister helped the Panthers football squad advance to the qualifying round of the state tournament in 2009 as a starting cornerback. McAlister is active in ASB, is an office TA with the counseling staff at Snohomish High School and volunteers with the Snohomish Food Bank. After high school, McAlister plans to enlist in the US Airforce, following a tradition of military service set by his older brother Brandon, who will see deployment to Iraq for the first time this summer through the Army National Guard.

31st Washington Lacrosse Boys State Championships
Memorial Stadium, Seattle

SEATTLE – Overlake’s Devon Schmidt scored six goals and 12 ground balls to lead the Owls to their first boys lacrosse state championship in a 17 - 11 Division II defeat of Eastside Catholic, Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.

Overlake used an aggressive transitional offense, firing 42 shots at freshman Eastside Catholic goaltender O’Neil Hughes to throw the Crusaders off their game. The game was the first state title appearance for Overlake in its 20-year history.

“This is an amazing win,” said senior George Dolack who scored three goals for the Owls. “After three years of losing in the first round of the playoffs we finally made it. The Redmond game was our biggest weapon,” said Dolack, referring to Overlake’s 12 – 7 loss to cross-town rival on March 25. “We had been playing well early in year. That loss felt horrible – it motivated us.”

Overlake came out of the gates hard with Sky Tweedie-Yates connecting beating Hughes just 51 seconds into the game and again nine seconds later give the Owls an early 2 – 0 lead.

Following a David Carlton goal at 10:35 to put the Crusaders on the board, Greg Safadago answered with his only goal of the night to send the Owl’s on a 4 – 1 run to close the first at 6 – 2.

In the second, with Overlake having extended their lead to 8 – 3, the Crusaders came marching back on a short-handed goal by Carlton, as the Crusaders scored four of the final five goals in the half close the gap to 9 – 7.

“It’s a game of runs. We had a run in the beginning and they hit us back,” said Overlake goaltender Chap Grubb. “After (Eastside Catholic’s) run, we came back and stopped them.”

In the third, Carlton, one of just four seniors for the Crusaders – who began playing the sport at Eastside Catholic just three years ago, opened scoring just 12 second into the half, but the Owls answered with four unanswered goals to extend their lead to 13 – 8.

In the fourth, the teams traded goals, but the Crusaders three nets weren’t enough as the Owls scored four of their won to cruise to the win.

“We were fighting to get momentum all night, but unfortunately it wasn’t there,” said Carlton who had seven goals, one assist and seven ground balls in his final game of his prep career.

Scoring:
Overlake 6 3 4 4 -- 17
Eastside Catholic 2 5 1 3 -- 11
