31st Washington Lacrosse Boys State Championships
Memorial Stadium, Seattle

SEATTLE – Overlake’s Devon Schmidt scored six goals and 12 ground balls to lead the Owls to their first boys lacrosse state championship in a 17 - 11 Division II defeat of Eastside Catholic, Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.

Overlake used an aggressive transitional offense, firing 42 shots at freshman Eastside Catholic goaltender O’Neil Hughes to throw the Crusaders off their game. The game was the first state title appearance for Overlake in its 20-year history.

“This is an amazing win,” said senior George Dolack who scored three goals for the Owls. “After three years of losing in the first round of the playoffs we finally made it. The Redmond game was our biggest weapon,” said Dolack, referring to Overlake’s 12 – 7 loss to cross-town rival on March 25. “We had been playing well early in year. That loss felt horrible – it motivated us.”

Overlake came out of the gates hard with Sky Tweedie-Yates connecting beating Hughes just 51 seconds into the game and again nine seconds later give the Owls an early 2 – 0 lead.

Following a David Carlton goal at 10:35 to put the Crusaders on the board, Greg Safadago answered with his only goal of the night to send the Owl’s on a 4 – 1 run to close the first at 6 – 2.

In the second, with Overlake having extended their lead to 8 – 3, the Crusaders came marching back on a short-handed goal by Carlton, as the Crusaders scored four of the final five goals in the half close the gap to 9 – 7.

“It’s a game of runs. We had a run in the beginning and they hit us back,” said Overlake goaltender Chap Grubb. “After (Eastside Catholic’s) run, we came back and stopped them.”

In the third, Carlton, one of just four seniors for the Crusaders – who began playing the sport at Eastside Catholic just three years ago, opened scoring just 12 second into the half, but the Owls answered with four unanswered goals to extend their lead to 13 – 8.

In the fourth, the teams traded goals, but the Crusaders three nets weren’t enough as the Owls scored four of their won to cruise to the win.

“We were fighting to get momentum all night, but unfortunately it wasn’t there,” said Carlton who had seven goals, one assist and seven ground balls in his final game of his prep career.

SEATTLE – Defending state champion Issaquah High School is set to take-on perpetual boys lacrosse powerhouse Mercer Island in the first of two state title match-ups at the 31st Washington Lacrosse Boys State Championships, Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.

The Boys Division I game gets underway at 7:30 p.m. as Issaquah, winner of its first state title in 2008, takes-on Mercer Island, who is making its eighth trip to the state championship in the past nine years. The game features a total of 11 All-State selections.

The Islanders, who have won four state titles, finished the regular season at 13-0-0 and 16-4-0 overall and have the league’s second most productive offense, outscoring their opponents 248 to 199. In the state playoffs, Mercer Island defeated Vashon (18-0) and Curtis (19-4) to reach the title game.

Issaquah finished the regular season 12-1-0 in league play and 16-2-0 overall, suffering only a 6 – 4 league defeat at the hands of the Mercer Island on April 24. The Eagles, who have advanced to the state title game four times, bring the league’s most prolific offense to the game, outscoring their opponents, 227 to 82 during the regular season. In the state playoffs, Issaquah defeated Skyline (13 – 5) and Bainbridge Island (5 – 4) in overtime to reach the title game.
In the Division II game, Redmond’s Overlake School, with a student-body population of just 267, takes on Eastside Catholic, who began offering lacrosse just three years ago, at 5:00 p.m. The Division II game features 10 All-Conference selections.

SELAH, Wash. -- David Carlton connected for four goals as Eastside Catholic downed a hard-hitting Selah squad 12 – 4 in Boys Division II lacrosse, Friday at Selah High School’s Karl Graf Field. The win kept the Crusaders’ league record perfect at 9-0-0, atop the Cascade Conference, while Selah dropped to 4-6-0.

“Selah was a physical team,” said Carlton, whose four goals lifted the senior mid-fielder into the top three in league scoring with 39 on the season. “We tried to slow it down and get it moving, but went back to our old game.”

The Crusaders took up residence for most of the game on the Selah end of the field, firing a total of 33 shots on first year goaltender Sam Marquis.

In the first quarter, the Crusaders won the opening draw and immediately marched into the Selah zone with senior attackman Riley Maris beating Marquis just 17 seconds into the game. Michael Rambaldini then scored at 7:51 and 2:25 to make it 3 – 0 at the end of the first.

In the second, Selah’s hard-hitting play and strong goaltending kept Eastside Catholic off the board until Michael Rambaldini hit Carlton with a quick pass in front of the net at 7:26 to giving the senior his first goal of the night.

After back-to-back slashing penalties by the Crusaders’ Carlton and Maris, Selah took control of the ball in front of the Eastside Catholic cage, but Corrie Friederick’s shot with 2:20 remaining went wide.

Back at full strength, the Eastside Catholic connected for another two before Selah’s Weston Ritts connected on back-to-back goals in the final minute of play narrowing the Crusaders lead to 6 – 2 going into the intermission.

In the third, Eastside Catholic again took up residence in the Selah end, but Maquis came up with save after save to keep the Crusaders to just two goals. But in the fourth, the Crusaders top ranked offense proved too much for the first-year Viking squad as they scored another four to seal the victory.

“We knew they had good shooters and fast shots. But our guys kept up with them. Shawn (Thompson) and Ethan (Bersing) really stepped up,” said Selah's Marquis, the league’s third-ranked goalender with a 9.0 goals against average. Marquis is among 12 Selah seniors on a roster of 25, most of which have crossed over from the Vikings football squad. All are just learning the game of lacrosse in Selah’s first year of play. “This team is really coming together at the end of the season. We can handle most of these kids.”
