31st Washington Lacrosse Boys State Championships
Memorial Stadium, Seattle

SEATTLE – Jordan Goldstein scored four goals as Issaquah ducked a late Mercer Island comeback to drop the Islanders 10 – 9 for their second consecutive Boys Division II lacrosse state championship, Saturday at Seattle’s Memorial Stadium.

The win avenged a 6 – 4 loss by the Eagles to Mercer Island on April 24 and kept the Islanders, who were making their eighth appearance in the state title game in the last nine years, out of the winners circle. “The win feels amazing,” said Goldstein, Issaquah’s leading scorer. “We wanted to come out and prove that we could play with Mercer Island. The win was a total group effort.”

Playing without the league’s leading scorer, Daniel Shields, who suffered a broken ankle prior to Islander’s semi-final win over Curtis, Mercer Island quickly fell behind 4 – 1 to an Issaquah squad determined to retain their state title.

In the second, the Islanders kept pace, scoring three, but still trailed the Eagles 8 – 4 at the half.

However, the second half was all Mercer Island.

Behind midfielder Conner Beckwith’s defensive play and eight ground balls, the Islanders notched the only goal of the third as Steven Caditz beat Eagle goaltender Cameron Danforth with just 12 seconds remaining in the quarter to bring the Islanders to within four. “We came out strong in the beginning but struggled in the end,” said Danforth who had six saves on the night.

In the fourth, following two Issaquah goals that extended the Eagle’s lead to 10 - 5, the Islanders staged a comeback that kept Issaquah’s quest for a repeat title in question up to the final shot.

With 7:52 left, the Islanders’ Michael Black, who was playing in place of the injured Shields, scored the first of four unanswered goals for the Islanders. Black found the net again at 6:43 and Connor Bernal scored his second of the night with 3:09 remaining to bring the game within two. With just 10 seconds left on the clock, Matthew Shields beat Danforth to bring the Islanders within one.

After fighting for possession on the following face-off, the Eagles senior Connor McClain was flagged for tripping, giving MI a man advantage and a final chance to tie the game.

As the clock ticked to zero, Danforth preserved the win, stopping Islander sophomore Doug Mahony’s last second shot. “He had a good look,” said Danforth. “You do everything you’re used to as a goalie (in that situation).”

With the state title, Issaquah captured their 10th straight win, finishing the season 15-1-0 in league play and 19-2-0 overall.

SAMMAMISH, Wash. -- Loreal Camp scored five goals and collected six ground balls to lead Mercer Island to a 14 – 8 win over Issaquah for the Islander’s first varsity girls state lacrosse championship, Saturday at Charlie Acosta Field on the campus of the Eastside Catholic School in Sammamish, Wash.

The Islander defense held Issaquah and the league’s second leading scorer Katie Mincin in check for most of the game to set the stage for its 14-goal blitz. Mincin, who averaged just over six goals per game in the regular season, beat Islander goaltender Helen Hansen just three times.

Mercer Island got down to business early as Camp took possession of a ground ball and drove deep into the Issaquah zone for the first of five unanswered goals by the Islanders. Issaquah finally got on the board with just 31 seconds remaining in the half to make it 5 – 1 at the intermission.

“We wanted to start the game fast and control the pace,” said Islander coach Tony D’Alessio, whose team launched 16 shots on Issaquah goaltender Teagan Cameron in the first half.

In the second, the Islanders again put the pressure on Cameron, as Camp grabbed the opening draw and marched in for the first of a four-goal Islander run to open the half.

“They’re hard to defend, it’s just tough to chase Loreal (Camp) and Sarah (Drucker) around the field,” said Issaquah midfielder Brittany Hogan.

At the mid-way point of the half, Issaquah finally took the Islanders off their game, scoring on five of eight shot attempts over the next six minutes to establish momentum.

“We got on a run. There was a drive to win,” said Hogan who had two of Issaquah’s five unanswered goals. The effort closed the gap to 11 – 7. But the Islanders held, netting three of the final four for a 9-goal half and the victory.

“My defense saved this game for me,” said MI goaltender Helen Hansen who recorded 25 saves – 17 in the second half. “They should get all of the credit.”

Scoring:
Issaquah 1 7 -- 8
Mercer Island 5 9 -- 14

Highlights: Loreal Camp, MI, 5 goals, 6 ground balls, 6 draw controls; Sarah Drucker, MI, 4 goals, 1 assist; Elizabeth Bachman, MI, 2 goals; Elena Skouras, MI, 2 goals; Ariana Lucia, MI, 1 goal; Clara Felker, MI, 6 caused turnovers; Helen Hanson, MI, 25 saves; Katie Mincin, IS, 3 goals; Brittany Hogan, IS, 2 goals, 7 ground balls; Brittany Hogan, IS, 2 goals; Meaghan Stratford, IS, 2 goals; Sidney Lee, IS, 1 goal; Teagan Cameron, IS, 14 saves)

MERCER ISLAND, Wash. -- Daniel Shields scored the go-ahead goal at 9:55 of the fourth quarter to lift Mercer Island to sole possession of first place in Division I with a 6 – 4 boys lacrosse win over Issaquah, Friday evening at Islander Stadium on Mercer Island.

With the win over the defending state champions, the Islanders preserved their undefeated league record, advancing to 8-0-0 in league play and 10-4-0 overall. Issaquah dropped to second at 7-1-0 in league play and 9-2-0 overall.

The winning goal came at 9:51 of the final quarter, as Shields worked his way from behind the Issaquah cage and wrapped a quick shot past Eagles goaltender Cameron Danforth for his third score of the night.

“We knew that Issaquah was coming hard. They’re patient and have great ball movement. If you look away, they’re gone – straight behind you,” said Shields, whose fourth goal at 6:25 of the fourth secured the win for the Islanders. The goal gave him 26 on the season, just two behind the league leader, Sam Snow of Bainbridge Island. “This feels great. We needed this game,” he said.

Shields got scoring underway just 47 seconds into the game after the Islanders won the opening draw and immediately marched into the Issaquah zone. Working from behind the net, Shields curled around the front of the cage firing the game’s first shot past Danforth.

Just 67 seconds later, Issaquah’s Jordan Goldstein connected on the first of a three-goal Issaquah run to knot the game at one goal apiece.

Jake Director and Todd Jones then added goals to put the Eagles up 3 – 1 before Shields connected a second time with just 34 seconds left in the quarter to bring the Islanders within one.

In the second, the Islanders’ physical play and defense shut down Issaquah’s scoring threat. Despite several well executed possessions with crisp passing around the Islanders cage, the Eagles failed to put a shot past Islander goaltender Hap Giraud. The defensive effort set the stage for MI’s lone goal in the quarter. With 47 seconds remaining, Islander midfielder Steven Caditz converted on a Steven Taylor pass to even the game at three going into the intermission.

“MI did a great job defensively,” said Goldstein who scored two of for Eagles goals in the game. “If you hold a good team like Mercer Island to six goals you need to produce offensively. We just didn’t finish well tonight.”

In the third, with the Eagles playing one man up after MI’s Travis Leung was flagged for a penalty, Goldstein again found the net at 6:34 to put Eagles in the lead 4 – 3 and seemingly in control of their own destiny.

However, Issaquah couldn’t hold the lead as Caditz netted the Islanders’ fourth and tying goal at 5:41, setting the stage for the Islanders in the fourth.

ISSAQUAH, Wash. – Todd Jones scored four goals as Issaquah recorded their seventh straight league victory in a 15 - 1 Boys Division I lacrosse defeat of Lakeside, Tuesday at Issaquah High School. With the win, the Eagles jumped past Mercer Island for sole possession of first place.

From the opening draw, the Issaquah pressured Lakeside relentlessly, swarming to nearly every ground ball. Senior Connor McClain led the way for the Eagles, collecting 11 ground balls on the night lifting his season total to a league leading 52. His sound defensive work gave the Eagle offense an opportunity to pepper Lakeside goaltender Nick Canino with shot after shot.

A total of nine Issaquah players scored in the win with Jones finding the net first, converting on a strong Jordan Goldstein pass at 9:18 of the opening quarter to take an early 1-0 lead. Throughout the quarter, the Eagles beat the Lions with speed and sound stick skills, eventually scoring three more times to go up 4 – 0.

In the second, Jones again opened scoring converting midfielder Jake Director pass to a goal at 10:19 of the quarter. Following a Director goal just 47 seconds later, Jones connected for his third score of the night at 8:37. The Eagles found the net once more on a Nate Bean goal to take a comfortable 8 – 0 lead into the intermission.

“The most important thing about this win, was to have more than a few weapons,” said Jones, who had only eight goals on the season coming into the game, five of which came in the Eagles early April defeat of Mukilteo. “I went back to finishing well. Goldstein, Director and Goodman helped so much in getting me looks.”

In the second half, Issaquah again scored first, finding the net at 8:23 of third, before Lakeside junior attackman Hector Rhodes converted a David Jameison pass into the Lions’ only goal of the night.

“We tried our hardest and got outrun every step of the game,” said Rhodes, who leads the now 2-6-0 Lions in scoring with 14 goals on the season.

The Eagles went on to score three more in the third, including Jones’ fourth goal, and another three in the final stanza to close out the game.

On Friday, Issaquah will battle Mercer Island, who is also undefeated in league play at 6-0-0. The game gets underway at 8 p.m. at Mercer Island High School Stadium.
