SEATTLE – The Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association (WHSBLA) has named second-year lacrosse program King’s Way High School in Vancouver, Wash. as its Division Il recipient of the Evert Smith Team Sportsmanship Award and Knights’ coach Dave Holler as Coach of the Year.

The annual sportsmanship award, named for the late Northwest lacrosse pioneer Evert Smith, recognizes a high school boys team in each of the two WHSBLA divisions that exemplifies the highest level of sportsmanship during the season. Eastlake Lacrosse, which draws students from Eastlake High School and other high schools in the Lake Washington School District, is the Division I recipient of the award.

Smith, who in 2006 was a posthumously enshrined in the Washington State Lacrosse Hall of Fame, worked tirelessly in the 1970s and 80s to organize and promote the sport of the lacrosse in Washington state.

The Coach of the Year award recognizes a coach who exemplifies sportsmanship, rapport with officials, other coaches and his own players. In just his second season at the helm, Holler led the Knights to a perfect 12 – 0 – 0 record in league play (13 – 4 – 0 overall) to win the Division II Olympic Conference outright. In the playoffs, King’s Way advanced to the state semi-finals before falling to Redmond’s Overlake School.

Other WHSBLA award recipients include longtime Issaquah assistant Jordan Bayly who was named Assistant Coach of the Year. Dr. Kevin Martin, Division II Lake Tapps Board President and member of the WHSBLA Board of Directors was named the league’s Person of the Year.

VANCOUVER, Wash. – Jordan Friesen scored the winning goal just 1 minutes, 8 seconds into overtime to preserve King’s Way’s undefeated season with an 8 – 7 Boys Division II high school lacrosse win over Tacoma, Friday at Cascade Ridge High School in Vancouver, Wash. The goal completed Friesen’s fourth hat trick of the season.

With the win, King’s Way advanced to a perfect 9-0-0 in league play and 10-1-0 overall, securing a home field advantage heading into May’s state tournament. It was the third straight one-goal defeat of Tacoma in the two-year history of the King’s Way program.

“This is the biggest win in our two years,” said King’s Way coach Dave Holler. “My boys came back and fought. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

The winning goal came after King’s Way’s perfect season was on the verge of being erased. Down 6 – 4 at the opening of the fourth quarter, the Knights fought back with three unanswered goals to take the lead. But it was their second of the three, a goal by junior midfielder Parker Dotsey, that gave the Knights needed momentum.

“I never lost faith,” said Holler, whose team has won three of their four meetings in two years – all by one goal. “I told my assistant coach (Tim Goodspeed) ‘if we tie this game we’ll win it’.”

With a one goal lead in the final minutes and the Knights in control of their own destiny, Tacoma came back to force the overtime period. With just 41 seconds remaining, Tacoma attackman Bryce Johnson eyed freshman Max Jones from behind the cage and hit him with a pass as he cut across the top of the box. Jones’ shot evened the game and forced the sudden death period.

In overtime, the Knights won the opening draw but lost control of the ball. In the scrum for possession, midfielder Brock Beall recovered the ground ball and lifted a pass onto the stick of Friesen, who bounced the game winner past Jones’ off-stick side.
