SAMMAMISH, Wash. – Lucy Williams scored with 1:01 remaining in double overtime to give Lakeside its fourth consecutive Girls Division I Washington state high school lacrosse title in a 14 – 13 thriller over Bainbridge Island, Saturday at Charlie Acosta Field on the campus of the Eastside Catholic School in Sammamish, Wash.

The victory was the seventh overall Girls Division I state championship for the Lions, tying them with Bainbridge who had held the edge since 2002.

In a game that came down to a final possession, Lakeside emerged victorious, consistently recovering from a relentless Bainbridge team and holding the Spartans to just their second lowest-point output of the season.

The winning goal came with time winding down in the second overtime, as Williams caught a crisp Emmy Armintrout pass in front of the net and fired a shot past Spartan goaltender Josefine Wallace for the go-ahead goal. “Emmy told me, ‘Lucy, you need to get open’, so I made a cut and was lucky she made a great pass.” The goal was just the second of the afternoon for the Second-Team All-State senior.

In the first, a stingy Bainbridge defense kept Lakeside in check for most of the half, before consecutive yellow cards forced Spartans’ coach Tami Tommila to replace two top line defenders. With Spartan midfielders now defending, Lakeside connected for two goals in the final minute to take a 6 – 4 halftime lead.

In the second, the Lions again controlled the ball early, scoring three unanswered goals to take a 9 – 4 lead with 16 minutes remaining.

But Bainbridge rallied, scoring five unanswered goals over the next five minutes to knot the game at 9 – 9. “Coming back from a five-goal deficit was quite a momentum changer. I’m proud of my girls for doing that,” said Tommila.

Lakeside then took the lead three separate times in the remaining 8:35 of the game, but Bainbridge responded to each with goals of their own including Jaclyn Biggers’ score on a free-possession shot with just 23 seconds remaining to force the overtime period.

“We knew this game was going down to one possession,” said Lakeside coach Jamie Asaka, who is in her fifth year at the helm of the Lions program. “The team that controls the game at the end and maintains possession was going to win it.” But the end never seemed to appear for the Lions.

In the first overtime, Lakeside’s Katrina Carlsen beat Wallace with just 44 seconds remaining, but Biggers again found the net, this time with just 5 seconds remaining, to force the second overtime. “At that point we needed to deny (Biggers) the ball,” said Asaka. “She’s very poised and has a great stick and great shot.”

In the second extra period, Lakeside won the opening draw and controlled play for most of the period before connecting for the game winner.

Morgan Merriman and Sarah Pollnow had three goals and Sarah Adler had 13 saves in goal for the Lions. In the loss Mariah Walk scored five for Bainbridge.

Scoring:
Lakeside 6 6 1 1 -- 14
Bainbridge 4 8 1 0 -- 13

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, Wash. – Sydney Whitaker scored the go-ahead goal with 4:06 remaining as Bainbridge remained undefeated, upsetting defending state champion Lakeside 10 – 8 in Girls Division I high school lacrosse, Wednesday at Bainbridge High School Memorial Stadium.

With three games remaining in the season, the win elevated the now 11-0-0 Spartans to sole possession of first place in Division I play. The win over Lakeside was the first in four tries for the Spartans, including last year’s 8 – 9 defeat in the state championship game.

The go-ahead goal broke an 8 – 8 tie late in the second half as Whitaker grabbed possession of the ball and patiently rolled around the Lakeside cage looking to distract the Lions defenders. “I wanted to draw the double team,” said Whitaker, whose move caught Lakeside goaltender Sarah Adler off guard. “But I saw an opening and ripped it.”

In the final minutes, Bainbridge added an insurance goal, with Jacklyn Biggers scoring on a Mariah Walk feed to seal the 10 - 8 victory.

“This one came down to the last four minutes,” said Bainbridge coach Tami Tommila, whose team was held to their lowest scoring output of the season by a tenacious Lakeside defense. “We kept hammering on Adler. Things happen when you keep shooting.”

Scoring got underway with the defending state champion Lions striking first at 21:36 on an Emmy Armintrout goal. Bainbridge then scored six of the next seven goals including three by Jaclyn Biggers to take a 6 – 2 lead before Lakeside’s defense tightened, cutting off nearly every Bainbridge penetration into their zone.

Following two Lakeside goals, with Bainbridge ahead 6 – 4 in the final two minutes of the half, the Spartans’ Sydney Whitaker was called for an illegal stick-check giving Lakeside a man advantage. However, the Lions had trouble gaining possession as Bainbridge kept the pressure on Adler with four short-handed shots.

The Lions finally were able to clear the zone and responded with Armintrout converting on a free position shot with 27 seconds remaining to bring the game within one. Four of the Lions’ five first-half goals came on free position shots.

In the second, Lakeside picked up where they left off in the first as Sadie Mackay’s goal at 21:41 knotted the game at six. Lucy Williams then found the net at 16:46 to put the Lions up 7 – 6.

“When they pulled ahead I tried to stay in the moment,” said Spartan goaltender Josefine Wallace, who faced just 13 shots on goal. “I have a great defense that I can depend on. They made the difference.”

The Spartans then scored the next two to take the lead, before Lakeside’s Katrina Carlson knotted the game at 8 – 8 with 11:36 remaining.

In other Division II action at Bainbridge Stadium, Bainbridge Island's Division II girls team downed Lakeside 11 - 6.

SEATTLE -- Hector Rhodes found the net with just 9-seconds left in overtime to give Lakeside a 10 – 9 Boys Division I lacrosse win over Eastlake, Wednesday at The Lakeside School in north Seattle.

Rhodes’ behind-the-back goal avenged a loss earlier in the week to Issaquah and gave the Lions their third win of the season, keeping them alive for a spot in May’s state tournament.

With Lakeside holding on to a one goal advantage as the clock ticked down in the final minutes of regulation, Eastlake’s Pat Keogh beat Lakeside goaltender Nick Canino to send the game into overtime.

In sudden death, both Eastlake and Lakeside had chance after chance to score, but neither could get the ball into the cage.

In the final minute, Lions midfielder Sten Jernudd threw a pass across the restraining box to Rhodes, who scampered 20 yards down the left side in a race against the clock. At the left side of the cage, with an Eastlake defender forcing him past the goal line extended and losing his angle on the goal with every additional step, Rhodes whipped a shot around his back, beating Eastlake’s Trevor Olson for the game-winning goal. The goal was the 14th on the season for Rhodes.

“That was the exact time to use that move,” said Lakeside coach Jeff Pattison, describing how Rhodes’ choice of an unorthodox move set up an angular advantage on the goal. “In that situation it wasn’t a showy move – it was a good player finding a good opportunity for a score.”

With the win, Lakeside advanced to 3-6-0, while Eastlake dropped to 0-7-0

ISSAQUAH, Wash. – Todd Jones scored four goals as Issaquah recorded their seventh straight league victory in a 15 - 1 Boys Division I lacrosse defeat of Lakeside, Tuesday at Issaquah High School. With the win, the Eagles jumped past Mercer Island for sole possession of first place.

From the opening draw, the Issaquah pressured Lakeside relentlessly, swarming to nearly every ground ball. Senior Connor McClain led the way for the Eagles, collecting 11 ground balls on the night lifting his season total to a league leading 52. His sound defensive work gave the Eagle offense an opportunity to pepper Lakeside goaltender Nick Canino with shot after shot.

A total of nine Issaquah players scored in the win with Jones finding the net first, converting on a strong Jordan Goldstein pass at 9:18 of the opening quarter to take an early 1-0 lead. Throughout the quarter, the Eagles beat the Lions with speed and sound stick skills, eventually scoring three more times to go up 4 – 0.

In the second, Jones again opened scoring converting midfielder Jake Director pass to a goal at 10:19 of the quarter. Following a Director goal just 47 seconds later, Jones connected for his third score of the night at 8:37. The Eagles found the net once more on a Nate Bean goal to take a comfortable 8 – 0 lead into the intermission.

“The most important thing about this win, was to have more than a few weapons,” said Jones, who had only eight goals on the season coming into the game, five of which came in the Eagles early April defeat of Mukilteo. “I went back to finishing well. Goldstein, Director and Goodman helped so much in getting me looks.”

In the second half, Issaquah again scored first, finding the net at 8:23 of third, before Lakeside junior attackman Hector Rhodes converted a David Jameison pass into the Lions’ only goal of the night.

“We tried our hardest and got outrun every step of the game,” said Rhodes, who leads the now 2-6-0 Lions in scoring with 14 goals on the season.

The Eagles went on to score three more in the third, including Jones’ fourth goal, and another three in the final stanza to close out the game.

On Friday, Issaquah will battle Mercer Island, who is also undefeated in league play at 6-0-0. The game gets underway at 8 p.m. at Mercer Island High School Stadium.

REDMOND, Wash. – Morgan Merriman and Sarah Pollnow each scored four goals as Lakeside advanced to a perfect 7 – 0 record with a 15 – 5 Girls Division I high school lacrosse victory over Lake Sammamish, Thursday at Redmond’s Marymoor Park. The win was the second of the day for Lakeside as the Lions’ second squad defeated Lake Sammamish’s second unit, 17 – 2 in a Division II game.

The Division I win moved Lakeside into a first-place tie with Bainbridge Island. Bainbridge is also undefeated in league play.

In Division I play, the first half was all Lakeside as Morgan Merriman scored on an unassisted shot just 1 minute, 32 seconds into the game. The score was the first of eight unanswered goals for the Lions before Ali Savage finally put Lake Sammamish on the board at 8:19 of the half.

In the second half, Lakeside took the field with a comfortable 10 – 1 lead and appeared to be on the same track as the first half as Sarah Pollnow connected on a solo shot just under 1 minute into the half to give the Lions their 11th goal.

However, Lake Sammamish responded to coach Lena Hanson’s halftime encouragement, scoring their first goal just 2 minutes, 13 seconds later on a free position shot by Jenna Carleton.

“Our team is young,” said Hanson, whose team graduated six seniors in 2008 – two of which are now playing NCAA lacrosse. “Lakeside is one of the best teams in the league. I told them to get their feet and trust themselves that they could compete with Lakeside.”

The teams then traded goals for nearly 12 minutes in end-to-end, evenly matched play. In the final eight minutes, only Lake Sammamish scored as Allie Savage found the Lakeside net beating Lions goaltender Sarah Adler with just 1:43 remaining.

“We were very impressed with Lake Sammamish,” said Lakeside assistant Marc Binder. “They threw and caught the ball better than we did. Despite the score, they clearly outplayed us.”

On Friday, Lakeside will attempt to keep its undefeated season in tact as the Lions take on 1-6-0 Curtis High School at the Lakeside School in north Seattle.

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash – Taylor Dean connected for six goals and Shawn Blaisdell netted five to lift underdog Curtis to an 18 – 6 Boys Division I high school lacrosse win over Lakeside, Thursday at Curtis High School near Tacoma, Wash.

Curtis opened scoring with an early goal at 11:19 of the first. However, heavily favored Lakeside came roaring back as Noah Harris and David Jamieson connected for goals just 50 seconds apart to give the Lions a 2 – 1 lead.

Curtis eventually took a 4 -3 edge to close out the first and scored two in the second to take a 6 – 4 advantage into the intermission, but was not operating at their full potential.

“We were a bit asleep in the first half. Lakeside was disciplined and came out ready to play,” said Curtis coach Kevin Leary.

At just 10:02 of the third, still not happy with his team’s performance, Leary called a time out to refocus his team. “We needed to start playing our game and stop chasing sticks,” he said. “We were playing the same stupid transition game we had going in the first.”

Less than 30 seconds later, Quinn Moody put Curtis on the board to take a 7 – 4 lead. Curtis then went on to score two short-handed goals on the way to a 6 – 0 third quarter rout of the Lions.

In the fourth, Curtis again turned up the heat, adding another six goals to Lakeside’s two nets.

Curtis goalkeeper Mitchell Homeyer (3-1-0) had 15 saves and Johnny Shapton scooped up seven ground balls to advance Curtis to 3-1-0 on the season. Lakeside dropped to 1-5-0.

Scoring
Lakeside: 3 1 0 2 -- 6
Curtis: 4 2 6 6 -- 18
