31st Washington Lacrosse Boys State Championships
Memorial Stadium, Seattle

SEATTLE – Overlake’s Devon Schmidt scored six goals and 12 ground balls to lead the Owls to their first boys lacrosse state championship in a 17 - 11 Division II defeat of Eastside Catholic, Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.

Overlake used an aggressive transitional offense, firing 42 shots at freshman Eastside Catholic goaltender O’Neil Hughes to throw the Crusaders off their game. The game was the first state title appearance for Overlake in its 20-year history.

“This is an amazing win,” said senior George Dolack who scored three goals for the Owls. “After three years of losing in the first round of the playoffs we finally made it. The Redmond game was our biggest weapon,” said Dolack, referring to Overlake’s 12 – 7 loss to cross-town rival on March 25. “We had been playing well early in year. That loss felt horrible – it motivated us.”

Overlake came out of the gates hard with Sky Tweedie-Yates connecting beating Hughes just 51 seconds into the game and again nine seconds later give the Owls an early 2 – 0 lead.

Following a David Carlton goal at 10:35 to put the Crusaders on the board, Greg Safadago answered with his only goal of the night to send the Owl’s on a 4 – 1 run to close the first at 6 – 2.

In the second, with Overlake having extended their lead to 8 – 3, the Crusaders came marching back on a short-handed goal by Carlton, as the Crusaders scored four of the final five goals in the half close the gap to 9 – 7.

“It’s a game of runs. We had a run in the beginning and they hit us back,” said Overlake goaltender Chap Grubb. “After (Eastside Catholic’s) run, we came back and stopped them.”

In the third, Carlton, one of just four seniors for the Crusaders – who began playing the sport at Eastside Catholic just three years ago, opened scoring just 12 second into the half, but the Owls answered with four unanswered goals to extend their lead to 13 – 8.

In the fourth, the teams traded goals, but the Crusaders three nets weren’t enough as the Owls scored four of their won to cruise to the win.

“We were fighting to get momentum all night, but unfortunately it wasn’t there,” said Carlton who had seven goals, one assist and seven ground balls in his final game of his prep career.

Overlake 6 3 4 4 -- 17

In the state playoffs, Mercer Island defeated Vashon (18-0) and Curtis (19-4) to reach the title game.

Issaquah finished the regular season 12-1-0 in league play and 16-2-0 overall, suffering only a 6 – 4 league defeat at the hands of the Mercer Island on April 24. WENATCHEE, Wash. – George Dolack scored six goals to lead the Overlake School to a 14 – 6 Boys Division II lacrosse win over Wenatchee, Saturday, at Westside High School in Wenatchee.

The win was the sixth straight for Overlake, which jumped past Redmond for sole possession of first place in the Evergreen Conference. Wenatchee is still winless at 0-8-0.

Overlake jumped out to the early lead, taking a 5 – 3 advantage in the first before Wenatchee came charging back in the second on back-to-back goals by Scott Hershey at 9:40 and Mitchell Parks 18 seconds later to knot the game at 5 – 5.

Just 16 seconds later, Overlake went back up for good as Devon Schmidt found the net. Schmidt connected again at 4:56 as the Owls eased ahead 7 – 5.

Wenatchee again pulled within one at 3:23 on Hershey’s third of the night, however the Owls’ offense was too much as they responded with another three goals to take a 10 – 6 lead into the intermission.

In the second half, behind shut-out goaltending of Overlake’s Chap Grubb, who replaced Jason Yokoyama in goal, the Owls blanked Wenatchee 6 – 0 through the third and fourth quarters.

“Overlake has one of the best offenses in the league. Over half their goals came on fast breaks,” said Wenatchee coach Ryan Fancher. “Our goaltender (Thomas Bass) stopped a lot of shots. He communicated well with our defense to keep them in line. This was one of his best games of the year.”

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Jessika Carstrom scored her seventh goal of the night with 47 seconds remaining in regulation to give Curtis a 16 – 15 come-from-behind Girls Division I high school lacrosse win over the Overlake School, Tuesday at Curtis High School near Tacoma.

In a tight transition game where the lead changed hands six times, Curtis engineered two goals in the final minute of play to capture their first win of the season and their first ever in Division I play.

With just 59 seconds remaining, Curtis’ Amanda Johnson picked up a pass at the restraining line and dodged two defenders on the way to the Overlake cage. Johnson’s shot beat Owl goaltender Erica Johnson on the stick-side to knot the game at 15.

On the following face-off, Curtis center Caroline Vandiver pulled the ball back in a cluster of six players where Carstrom grabbed her fifth draw control of the game. It took Carstrom just 12 seconds to shed two defenders and drive deep into the Overlake zone to set up the decisive shot, a stick-side blast past Johnson for victory. The score was her 21st of the season.

“I am very excited. This is an important win for our program,” said Curtis head coach Michelle Flaten, whose school made the leap to the more competitive Division I level in 2009 with six other teams to make room for new high school programs entering the sport. In 2008, an 11-2-1 Curtis squad advanced to the Division II state semi-final game before falling to state runner-up Bellevue High School.

Curtis got on the board just 2 minutes, 16 seconds into the game as Carstrom put the Vikings up 1 – 0. Overlake then scored the next three on goals by Sophie Arlow, Michelle Dutro and Kerri Smith to take a 3 -1 lead.

After an Amanda Johnson goal at 17:01 to bring Curtis within one, Overlake struck twice at 16:38 and 16:06 to again pull ahead by two goals prompting Flaten to call a time out and regroup.

“I told them we needed to communicate better on defense. In a man to man situation we needed to be sliding back to cover the open player,” said Flaten.

The adjustment paid off with Curtis regaining control of the ball, setting up six of the next nine goals scored over the remaining 7 minutes, 42 seconds and taking an 8 – 7 lead into the intermission.

In the second half, Curtis again took the field with furry as Carstrom scored just one minute into the half and Amanda Johnson and Caroline Vandiver each finding the Overlake net to gain an 11 – 7 advantage.

At 14:03, Overlake delivered the first of two three-goal bursts to creep within one of Curtis at 10 - 11. Following two Curtis goals separated by a lone Overlake score, the Owls again connected for a trio of scores to take a 14 – 13 lead with 6:35 remaining.

In the final six minutes, Curtis fought back twice with game knotting goals, each by Amanda Johnson, to put the Vikings in position for their first win in seven starts.

With the loss, Overlake dropped to 1-4-0 on the season.

March 18, 2009

REDMOND, Wash. – Garfield’s Linea Whisman scored four goals to lift the Bulldogs past Overlake, in a season opening victory Wednesday at Redmond’s Overlake School.

In a close-fought game that saw Overlake take a 4-3 lead into the intermission, the Owls appeared to be in control, before coaches elected to play short-handed for most of the second half instead of run afoul of a new substitution rule.

With 10:48 remaining and a 7-6 lead, Overlake’s Claire Krueger was slapped with her second yellow card of the night for a slash while double-teaming a Garfield player along with Devika Dhawan. By rule Krueger was ejected.

But with early-season confusion over the length of time a team must play short-handed following an ejection, Overlake coach Sue Haviland elected to play conservatively and not replace her player after the three-minute power play had elapsed. Prior to the 2009 season, coaches could replace an ejected player immediately.

“I was hesitant to go to the referee, because it’s my responsibility to know the rules,” said Haviland, who saw her team’s lead begin to evaporate just 30 seconds later on a Garfield goal by Maria Sandvig. The Bulldogs then went on to score four unanswered goals to take an 11-7 lead with 2 minutes remaining before a referee questioned Haviland’s team playing short-handed.

After returning to full strength, Overlake quickly scored three goals, bringing the game to within one, but was unable to convert in the final 40 seconds of play to tie the game.

Overlake’s Alison Havran scored five times in her team’s loss.

Garfield goalkeeper Sydney Campbell (1-0) had eight saves in her first win of the season. Overlake’s Erica Johnson (0-1) stopped 11 in the loss.
