SAMMAMISH, Wash. -- Loreal Camp scored five goals and collected six ground balls to lead Mercer Island to a 14 – 8 win over Issaquah for the Islander’s first varsity girls state lacrosse championship, Saturday at Charlie Acosta Field on the campus of the Eastside Catholic School in Sammamish, Wash.

The Islander defense held Issaquah and the league’s second leading scorer Katie Mincin in check for most of the game to set the stage for its 14-goal blitz. Mincin, who averaged just over six goals per game in the regular season, beat Islander goaltender Helen Hansen just three times.

Mercer Island got down to business early as Camp took possession of a ground ball and drove deep into the Issaquah zone for the first of five unanswered goals by the Islanders. Issaquah finally got on the board with just 31 seconds remaining in the half to make it 5 – 1 at the intermission.

“We wanted to start the game fast and control the pace,” said Islander coach Tony D’Alessio, whose team launched 16 shots on Issaquah goaltender Teagan Cameron in the first half.

In the second, the Islanders again put the pressure on Cameron, as Camp grabbed the opening draw and marched in for the first of a four-goal Islander run to open the half.

“They’re hard to defend, it’s just tough to chase Loreal (Camp) and Sarah (Drucker) around the field,” said Issaquah midfielder Brittany Hogan.

At the mid-way point of the half, Issaquah finally took the Islanders off their game, scoring on five of eight shot attempts over the next six minutes to establish momentum.

“We got on a run. There was a drive to win,” said Hogan who had two of Issaquah’s five unanswered goals. The effort closed the gap to 11 – 7. But the Islanders held, netting three of the final four for a 9-goal half and the victory.

“My defense saved this game for me,” said MI goaltender Helen Hansen who recorded 25 saves – 17 in the second half. “They should get all of the credit.”

Scoring:
Issaquah 1 7 -- 8
Mercer Island 5 9 -- 14

Highlights: Loreal Camp, MI, 5 goals, 6 ground balls, 6 draw controls; Sarah Drucker, MI, 4 goals, 1 assist; Elizabeth Bachman, MI, 2 goals; Elena Skouras, MI, 2 goals; Ariana Lucia, MI, 1 goal; Clara Felker, MI, 6 caused turnovers; Helen Hanson, MI, 25 saves; Katie Mincin, IS, 3 goals; Brittany Hogan, IS, 2 goals, 7 ground balls; Brittany Hogan, IS, 2 goals; Meaghan Stratford, IS, 2 goals; Sidney Lee, IS, 1 goal; Teagan Cameron, IS, 14 saves)

FRIDAY HARBOR, Wash. -- Forest Dayton and Isaac Taylor each scored three goals to lead San Juan to a 13-6 Boys Division II high school lacrosse win over Whatcom in their regular season finale, Saturday at Friday Harbor High School.

The win lifted San Juan to 8-4-0 and guaranteed them second place in the Skagit Conference.  With the loss, Whatcom dropped to 5-6-0.

Whatcom struck first as Daniel Hernandez connected for his only goal of the game at 7:26 of the first.  But San Juan retaliated just 23 seconds later as Dylan Galligan won the following draw and marched-in on Whatcom goaltender Curtis McFadden to knot the game at one.  San Juan connected again with just 24 seconds remaining in the first on an unassisted shot by Forest Dayton.

In the second, Dayton scored again, connecting just 11 seconds into the period for the first of a three-goal run by San Juan.  Following a Jake David net at 5:54 for Whatcom’s second goal, Isaac Taylor connected at 3:23 to give San Juan a 6 – 2 advantage at the half.

Following the intermission, San Juan got down to business scoring two goals within the first 1:28 of the second half.  But it was defenseman Michael Ausilio that fired-up San Juan, setting the tone for the remainder of the game.

After grabbing a ground ball in the Whatcom zone, Ausilio rumbled up to midfield and dished the ball off.  When the ball came back to him, Ausilio charged in on McFadden, beating him on the right, non stick side for his first goal of the season.

“That really fired up the guys – it was really the capper,” said San Juan coach Rob Cuomo.  “At that point we said, ‘no penalties.  If we play smart we’ll be OK.”

Wenatchee retaliated with three goals of their own, to narrow San Juan’s lead to 9 – 5 but never got any closer as Dayton connected for his third of the night to round out the quarter and, backed San Juan went on to score three of the fourth quarter’s four goals to put the game out of reach.

Cuomo credited the success of the San Juan offense to junior goaltender Calen Mehrer, who stopped 14 of 20 Whatcom shots, including nine in the first half.  “Calen played the angles so well today.  He stopped a lot of goals with his body.  He was in the right place at the right time,” he said.  “When he’s playing well, they know they have an ace in the hole.”

SELAH, Wash. -- David Carlton connected for four goals as Eastside Catholic downed a hard-hitting Selah squad 12 – 4 in Boys Division II lacrosse, Friday at Selah High School’s Karl Graf Field. The win kept the Crusaders’ league record perfect at 9-0-0, atop the Cascade Conference, while Selah dropped to 4-6-0.

“Selah was a physical team,” said Carlton, whose four goals lifted the senior mid-fielder into the top three in league scoring with 39 on the season. “We tried to slow it down and get it moving, but went back to our old game.”

The Crusaders took up residence for most of the game on the Selah end of the field, firing a total of 33 shots on first year goaltender Sam Marquis.

In the first quarter, the Crusaders won the opening draw and immediately marched into the Selah zone with senior attackman Riley Maris beating Marquis just 17 seconds into the game. Michael Rambaldini then scored at 7:51 and 2:25 to make it 3 – 0 at the end of the first.

In the second, Selah’s hard-hitting play and strong goaltending kept Eastside Catholic off the board until Michael Rambaldini hit Carlton with a quick pass in front of the net at 7:26 to giving the senior his first goal of the night.

After back-to-back slashing penalties by the Crusaders’ Carlton and Maris, Selah took control of the ball in front of the Eastside Catholic cage, but Corrie Friederick’s shot with 2:20 remaining went wide.

Back at full strength, the Eastside Catholic connected for another two before Selah’s Weston Ritts connected on back-to-back goals in the final minute of play narrowing the Crusaders lead to 6 – 2 going into the intermission.

In the third, Eastside Catholic again took up residence in the Selah end, but Maquis came up with save after save to keep the Crusaders to just two goals. But in the fourth, the Crusaders top ranked offense proved too much for the first-year Viking squad as they scored another four to seal the victory.

“We knew they had good shooters and fast shots. But our guys kept up with them. Shawn (Thompson) and Ethan (Bersing) really stepped up,” said Selah's Marquis, the league’s third-ranked goalender with a 9.0 goals against average. Marquis is among 12 Selah seniors on a roster of 25, most of which have crossed over from the Vikings football squad. All are just learning the game of lacrosse in Selah’s first year of play. “This team is really coming together at the end of the season. We can handle most of these kids.”

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. – Freshman Kellen Kennedy scored four goals as South Kitsap High School broke one of the longest losing skids in Washington state high school lacrosse history, Tuesday with a 12 – 4 Boys Division II win over rival North Kitsap at Hidden Creek Elementary School in Port Orchard, Wash.

The Wolves’ who had not won this season and had amassed a total of 34 straight losses dating back three years, finally left the field winners on Tuesday, playing a hard fought, physical lacrosse from the opening quarter.

“To play hard, come together and see the winning side is great for our kids,” said South Kitsap coach Michael Kehl, whose team, now in its seventh year, consists of 70 to 80 percent first year players where most high schools in the state have strong youth lacrosse pipelines similar to baseball, football and basketball that provide their teams with experienced players. “To see these guys able to be competitive and run with the stronger teams is very rewarding,” he said. “Now that they have a taste of winning it’s going to help grow our program.”

South Kitsap opened the game with determination, outscoring North Kitsap 8 – 1 in the first half, including shutting out the Vikings in the second quarter.

“We got some momentum on our side early on and it carried through the game,” said Kehl, who played collegiate lacrosse at Chico State in California.

In the second half, South Kitsap’s defense again controlled the game, holding the Vikings to just one goal in the third and two in the fourth.

South Kitsap’s Brett Walker and David Gibson each contributed three goals in the win and goaltender Zach Retzlaf had 17 saves as the Vikings moved into sixth place in the Olympic Conference.

North Kitsap, which defeated South 10 – 5 in their first meeting April 14, dropped to 1-10-0 on the season.
