31st Washington Lacrosse Boys State Championships
Memorial Stadium, Seattle
SEATTLE – Jordan Goldstein scored four goals as Issaquah ducked a late Mercer Island comeback to drop the Islanders 10 – 9 for their second consecutive Boys Division II lacrosse state championship, Saturday at Seattle’s Memorial Stadium.
The win avenged a 6 – 4 loss by the Eagles to Mercer Island on April 24 and kept the Islanders, who were making their eighth appearance in the state title game in the last nine years, out of the winners circle. “The win feels amazing,” said Goldstein, Issaquah’s leading scorer. “We wanted to come out and prove that we could play with Mercer Island. The win was a total group effort.”
Playing without the league’s leading scorer, Daniel Shields, who suffered a broken ankle prior to Islander’s semi-final win over Curtis, Mercer Island quickly fell behind 4 – 1 to an Issaquah squad determined to retain their state title.
In the second, the Islanders kept pace, scoring three, but still trailed the Eagles 8 – 4 at the half.
However, the second half was all Mercer Island.
Behind midfielder Conner Beckwith’s defensive play and eight ground balls, the Islanders notched the only goal of the third as Steven Caditz beat Eagle goaltender Cameron Danforth with just 12 seconds remaining in the quarter to bring the Islanders to within four. “We came out strong in the beginning but struggled in the end,” said Danforth who had six saves on the night.
In the fourth, following two Issaquah goals that extended the Eagle’s lead to 10 - 5, the Islanders staged a comeback that kept Issaquah’s quest for a repeat title in question up to the final shot.
With 7:52 left, the Islanders’ Michael Black, who was playing in place of the injured Shields, scored the first of four unanswered goals for the Islanders. Black found the net again at 6:43 and Connor Bernal scored his second of the night with 3:09 remaining to bring the game within two. With just 10 seconds left on the clock, Matthew Shields beat Danforth to bring the Islanders within one.
After fighting for possession on the following face-off, the Eagles senior Connor McClain was flagged for tripping, giving MI a man advantage and a final chance to tie the game.
As the clock ticked to zero, Danforth preserved the win, stopping Islander sophomore Doug Mahony’s last second shot. “He had a good look,” said Danforth. “You do everything you’re used to as a goalie (in that situation).”
With the state title, Issaquah captured their 10th straight win, finishing the season 15-1-0 in league play and 19-2-0 overall.

In 2009, over 2,370 high school students representing 75 boys and 49 girls varsity and junior varsity teams in Washington state will compete in a nine-week season March – May with the annual Washington State High School Championships taking place May 16 (girls) and May 30 (boys). Varsity boys lacrosse is contested in the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association (http://www.whsbla.org/) with 14 Division I and 28 Division II teams. 31st Washington Lacrosse Boys State ChampionshipsMemorial Stadium, Seattle
SEATTLE – Overlake’s Devon Schmidt scored six goals and 12 ground balls to lead the Owls to their first boys lacrosse state championship in a 17 - 11 Division II defeat of Eastside Catholic, Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.
Overlake used an aggressive transitional offense, firing 42 shots at freshman Eastside Catholic goaltender O’Neil Hughes to throw the Crusaders off their game. The game was the first state title appearance for Overlake in its 20-year history.
“This is an amazing win,” said senior George Dolack who scored three goals for the Owls. “After three years of losing in the first round of the playoffs we finally made it. The Redmond game was our biggest weapon,” said Dolack, referring to Overlake’s 12 – 7 loss to cross-town rival on March 25. “We had been playing well early in year. That loss felt horrible – it motivated us.”
Overlake came out of the gates hard with Sky Tweedie-Yates connecting beating Hughes just 51 seconds into the game and again nine seconds later give the Owls an early 2 – 0 lead.
Following a David Carlton goal at 10:35 to put the Crusaders on the board, Greg Safadago answered with his only goal of the night to send the Owl’s on a 4 – 1 run to close the first at 6 – 2.
In the second, with Overlake having extended their lead to 8 – 3, the Crusaders came marching back on a short-handed goal by Carlton, as the Crusaders scored four of the final five goals in the half close the gap to 9 – 7.
“It’s a game of runs. We had a run in the beginning and they hit us back,” said Overlake goaltender Chap Grubb. “After (Eastside Catholic’s) run, we came back and stopped them.”
In the third, Carlton, one of just four seniors for the Crusaders – who began playing the sport at Eastside Catholic just three years ago, opened scoring just 12 second into the half, but the Owls answered with four unanswered goals to extend their lead to 13 – 8.
In the fourth, the teams traded goals, but the Crusaders three nets weren’t enough as the Owls scored four of their won to cruise to the win.
“We were fighting to get momentum all night, but unfortunately it wasn’t there,” said Carlton who had seven goals, one assist and seven ground balls in his final game of his prep career.

The Boys Division I game gets underway at 7:30 p.m. as Issaquah, winner of its first state title in 2008, takes-on Mercer Island, who is making its eighth trip to the state championship in the past nine years. The game features a total of 11 All-State selections.
The Islanders, who have won four state titles, finished the regular season at 13-0-0 and 16-4-0 overall and have the league’s second most productive offense, outscoring their opponents 248 to 199. In the state playoffs, Mercer Island defeated Vashon (18-0) and Curtis (19-4) to reach the title game.
Issaquah finished the regular season 12-1-0 in league play and 16-2-0 overall, suffering only a 6 – 4 league defeat at the hands of the Mercer Island on April 24. The Eagles, who have advanced to the state title game four times, bring the league’s most prolific offense to the game, outscoring their opponents, 227 to 82 during the regular season. In the state playoffs, Issaquah defeated Skyline (13 – 5) and Bainbridge Island (5 – 4) in overtime to reach the title game.
In the Division II game, Redmond’s Overlake School, with a student-body population of just 267, takes on Eastside Catholic, who began offering lacrosse just three years ago, at 5:00 p.m. The Division II game features 10 All-Conference selections.
Overlake is making its first trip to the boys state championship game in the 20-year history of its lacrosse program. The Owls finished the regular season11-1-0 in league play and 12-2-0 overall to lead the Evergreen Conference. Their only league loss came on March 25 in a 12 – 7 defeat by Redmond. In the state playoffs, Overlake defeated Three Rivers (15 – 4), Mukilteo (12 – 10) and King’s Way (10 – 6) to reach the title game.
In just their third year of play, Eastside Catholic is making their first trip to the state title game. In 2009, the Crusaders amassed a perfect 12-0-0 league record and 14-1-0 overall record to win the Cascade Conference outright. They outscored their opponents 241 to 67. The 174-point differential is the best of any Division I or II team. Eastside Catholic’s only loss came in a 16 – 7 non-league defeat of Division I Issaquah on May 2. In the state playoffs, Eastside Catholic defeated Bishop Blanchet (13 – 10), Stadium (13 – 3) and Redmond (13 – 10) to reach the state title game.
The games are preceded by two 5th / 6th grade regional honor games beginning at 12 noon and two regional all-star games beginning at 2:00 p.m. The Division II state title game gets underway at 5:00 p.m. with the Division I game immediately following at 7:30 p.m.

SEATTLE – Defending state champion Issaquah and Mercer Island each won their Division I semi-finals while Eastside Catholic and Overlake won their Division II semis to advance to Saturday’s 31st annual Washington Lacrosse Boys State Championship games at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.
Issaquah returned to the Boys Division I state championship after downing Bainbridge 5 – 4 in overtime at Issaquah High School while MI, with a 19 – 4 win over Curtis at Mercer Island High School, earned their eighth berth in nine years in the state title game.
In the Division II semi-finals, Eastside Catholic downed Redmond 13 – 10 at the Eastside Catholic School while Overlake scored an upset win over King’s Way in Vancouver, Wash.

MERCER ISLAND, Wash. -- Mercer Island advanced to Saturday’s Washington Lacrosse Boys State Championship Game with a 19 – 4 Division I semi-final win over Curtis, Wednesday at Mercer Island High School. The Islanders will take on defending state champion, Issaquah, who defeated Bainbridge 5 – 4 in overtime in their semi-final. It is the Islanders’ eighth trip to the state championship game in the past nine years.
The Islanders, who were led by sophomore Mathew Shields with five goals, dominated early, going on a 10 – 0 run that spanned deep into the second quarter before Taylor Dean put Curtis on the board with 3:50 remaining.
Just 16 seconds later, Shields countered with two goals in 11 seconds to give MI a 12 – 1 advantage. Following two Curtis goals by Landon Carr, Shields scored again with 1:58 remaining to send the Islanders into the intermission with 13 – 3 lead.
In the third, the Islanders again dominated, scoring four unanswered goals before Curtis found the net on a Taylor Dean shot at 2:59.
MI scored once more in the third and added a solo in the fourth to cruise to the win and their eighth berth in the state title game.

Bainbridge 4, Issaquah 5 OT
ISSAQUAH, Wash. – In a rematch of last year’s state championship, Issaquah again prevailed in dramatic fashion with a 5 – 4 overtime Boys Division I semi-final win over Bainbridge, Wednesday at Issaquah High School. The win sent the defending state champion Eagles back to the state title game, where they will take on Mercer Island on Saturday. The Islanders dropped Curtis 19 – 4 in their semi-final.
The winning goal came at 2:13 of the overtime period after Issaquah’s Connor McClain forced a turnover deep in the Issaquah zone. Eagles’ midfielder Evan Greenhall scooped up the ground ball and scampered 50 yards up the right wing and placed a pass nicely on the stick of Kevin Powers. Outwitting the defense, Powers turned and beat Spartan goaltender Bryce Stevenson with a stick-side bouncer for the win.
Bainbridge controlled the game early, outscoring the Eagles 2 – 1 in the first on two goals by All-American Sam Snow. In the second, the two teams traded goals giving the Spartans a 3 – 2 half-time advantage.
In the third, Issaquah’s Connor McClain and Todd Jones each found the net to put the Eagles up 4 – 3. But Bainbridge, behind stellar goaltending by Stevenson, tied the game on a Bjorn Osterson goal at 6:46 remaining in the fourth.
Stevenson had 20 saves in goal for Bainbridge.

SAMMAMISH, Wash. -- Andrew Carlton scored four goals as Eastside Catholic downed Redmond 13 – 10 in its Boys Division II semi-final at Eastside Catholic High School in Sammamish to send the Crusaders to Saturday’s state championship game with Overlake.
After taking a 3 – 2 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Crusaders burst forth with six goals in the second to take a 9 – 3 lead into half-time.
In the third, Redmond and Eastside Catholic each scored three. But, following an early Crusaders goal in the fourth, Redmond fought back with a Jake Bernstein goal at 7:46 and three by Tyler Dougherty. His last came with just 43 seconds remaining.
O’Neil Hughes had eight saves for the Crusaders and Nicco Shewey had 10 saves for Redmond. Redmond is only the second team to score more than nine goals on the Crusaders this season.

VANCOUVER, Wash. – Sky Tweedie-Yates’ hat trick helped lift Overlake to a 10 – 6 Boys Division II semi-final upset over King’s Way, Wednesday at Columbia River High School in Vancouver, Wash. The win sent Overlake into Saturday’s state championship to face high-scoring Eastside Catholic.
King’s Way scored the lone goal in the first, but Overlake came charging back in the second, outscoring the Knights 4 – 2 to take a 4 – 3 lead into halftime. In the third, Overlake broke the game open connecting for four unanswered goals to take an 8 – 3 lead. In the fourth, King’s Way battled back with three of their own, but fell short.
Chap Grubb had 16 saves in goal for the Owls, while Max Amondson had 19 saves for the Knights.

In Boys Division I play, Curtis takes-on Mercer Island at 7 p.m. at Mercer Island’s Islander Stadium and Bainbridge Island battles Issaquah in a 7 p.m. game at Issaquah High School.
In Boys Division II play, Redmond takes-on Eastside Catholic at 7 p.m. at the Eastside Catholic School in Sammamish, Wash. and Redmond’s Overlake School travels to Vancouver, Wash. to take-on King’s Way High School. The game gets underway at 8 p.m. at Columbia River High School.
Division I Semi-Finals
Curtis at Mercer Island (Mercer Island High School / 7:00 p.m.)
In the first Division I semi-final, Curtis, which finished fourth in the regular season with a 9-4-0 league record and 11-5-0 overall, will have their hands full with Mercer Island. The Vikings’s roster includes All-American and First Team All-State midfielder Landon Carr, Second Team All-State attackman Taylor Dean along with Devin Cavanaugh, who received Honorable Mention in All-State balloting.
The Islanders, which finished the regular season at 13-0-0 and 16-4-0 overall, have the league’s second most productive offense, outscoring their opponents 248 to 199. MI carries All-American Daniel Shields on its roster along with Conner Beckwith, who along with Shields received First Team All-State honors and three Second Team All-State selections (Hap Giraud, Connor Rafety, Steven Caditz). The Islanders have been to the state championship game seven times including their last appearance in 2007. The Islanders won it all in 2006, 2005, 2004 and 2001.
Bainbridge at Issaquah (Issaquah High School / 7:00 p.m.)

Issaquah, which finished the season 12-1-0 in league play and 16-2-0 overall, brings the league’s most prolific offense to the game. Their only league loss was a 6 – 4 defeat at the hands of the Mercer Island on April 24. Issaquah has advanced to the state title match three times, winning it all in 2008 in an 11 – 8 upset of the Bainbridge Island.
Bainbridge is one of the most successful programs in the state. The Spartans, who boast three First Team All-State selections (2009 All-American Sam Snow, Bryce Stevenson, Dugan McDermot) and Second-Team All-State selection Kevin Nguyen, finished the season 11-2-0 in league play and 13-3-0 overall for third place. SEATTLE – Mercer Island, Issaquah and Curtis all advanced to the semi-finals of the Boys Division I high school lacrosse playoffs, while King’s Way of Vancouver, Wash. advanced to the Boys Division II semi-finals, with quarter-final playoff wins on Friday.
In Division I, Mercer Island shut-out Vashon Island 18 – 0, Issaquah bested cross-town rival Skyline 13 – 5 and Curtis overcame Bellevue 9 – 7 to all advance.
In Division II, King’s Way scored two fourth quarter goals to break a dead-heat with Lake Tapps, sending the Knights into the state semi-finals.
State semi-finals in both divisions take place Wednesday, May 27. The Washington Lacrosse Boys State Championships take place Saturday, May 30 at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.

MERCER ISLAND, Wash. – John Wettack scored five goals and Steven Caditz scored four as Mercer Island shut out Vashon Island 18 – 0, Friday in Boys Division I high school lacrosse quarter-final playoff action at Mercer Island High School The win advanced the Islanders to Wednesday’s semi-final matchup with Curtis. The Islanders took command from the opening draw scoring seven in the first quarter and four in the second to jump to an 11 – 0 half-time lead. MI tallied another five in the third and tacked-on two in the fourth to cruise to the win. Steven Taylor scored three goals and Conner Beckwith collected seven ground balls in the win.

The win propelled Curtis into Wednesday’s state semi-final with Mercer Island. VANCOUVER, Wash. – Brock Beall equaled a season-high five goals to lead King’s Way to a 13 – 10 Boys Division II high school lacrosse quarter-final playoff win over Lake Tapps, Friday at Columbia River High School in Vancouver, Wash. The win advanced the Knights to Wednesday’s semi-final matchup with Overlake. King’s Way jumped to a 5 – 1 lead in the first quarter, but was matched goal-for-goal through the end of the third by a determined Lake Tapps squad. In the fourth, Lake Tapps outscored the Knights 2 – 1 but in the end fell three goals short. Parker Dotsey had 15 ground balls and Max Amondson had 19 saves in goal for King’s Way. In Division II, King’s Way scored two fourth quarter goals to break a dead-heat with Lake Tapps, sending the Knights into the state semi-finals.
State semi-finals in both divisions take place Wednesday, May 27. The Washington Lacrosse Boys State Championships take place Saturday, May 30 at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.

MERCER ISLAND, Wash. – John Wettack scored five goals and Steven Caditz scored four as Mercer Island shut out Vashon Island 18 – 0, Friday in Boys Division I high school lacrosse quarter-final playoff action at Mercer Island High School The win advanced the Islanders to Wednesday’s semi-final matchup with Curtis. The Islanders took command from the opening draw scoring seven in the first quarter and four in the second to jump to an 11 – 0 half-time lead. MI tallied another five in the third and tacked-on two in the fourth to cruise to the win. Steven Taylor scored three goals and Conner Beckwith collected seven ground balls in the win.

The win sends the Eagles to Wednesday’s state semi-final with Bainbridge Island. With the game knotted at two goals each after the first quarter, Issaquah shut out Skyline 4 – 0 in the second to take a 6 – 2 lead into the intermission. In the third the Eagles outscored Skyline 3 – 2 and added another four in the final stanza to cap the win. Connor McClain had seven ground balls at Cameron Danforth had four saves for Issaquah. Hap Seil had 11 saves in goal for Skyline.

The win propelled Curtis into Wednesday’s state semi-final with Mercer Island. Bellevue jumped to the early 2 – 1 lead in the first, but Curtis battled back in the second to knot the game at 4 – 4 going into the half. In the third, both teams tallied three goals each to knot the game at 7 – 7 going into the final stanza. Dean’s fourth quarter goals at 7:29 and 4:02 gave the junior attackman five goals on the night. Landon Carr had six ground balls and Mitchell Homeyer had 20 saves in goal for Curtis. Cole Nordstrom had three goals and Cole Hendrickson had 13 saves for Bellevue.

SEATTLE – Bainbridge Island advanced to the Boys Division I state lacrosse semi-finals, while Redmond, Eastside Catholic and Overlake all advanced to the Boys Division II semis in Thursday’s high school lacrosse playoff action in Washington state.
In Division I, Bainbridge upended Northshore 21 – 4 to move along to Wednesday’s semi-final matchup with Friday’s Issaquah, Skyline winner.
In Division II, Redmond eliminated Tacoma 9 – 1, Eastside Catholic downed Stadium 13 – 3 and Overlake edged Mukilteo 12 – 10 to all advance.
State quarter-final action continues on Friday, while semi-finals in both divisions take place Wednesday, May 27. The Washington Lacrosse Boys State Championships take place Saturday, May 30 at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, Wash. – Kevin Nguyen scored five goals and collected seven ground balls as Bainbridge rolled-past Northshore 21 – 4 in the Boys Division I lacrosse quarter-finals, Thursday at Bainbridge Island High School. The win advanced the Spartans to Wednesday’s semi-final matchup with Friday’s Issaquah, Skyline winner. Bainbridge jumped out to a 12 – 1 lead at the half and added another seven goals in the second the half the cruise to the playoff win. In the win, Jordan Wagner had four goals, Sam Snow had three and Dugan McDermot had 10 ground balls. Northshore’s Taylor Wisman and Bowen Hadley each had two goals and Stuart Dransfield had 17 saves in the loss.

Washington Lacrosse Boys State Championships Division I Team-by-Team Preview
Team-by-team preview of Washington state's Division I boys high school lacrosse teams in the 2009 state championships tournamement. State tournament play begins Thursday, May 21. The Washington Boys Lacrosse State Championship games for Division I and II take place Saturday, May 30 at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.
Boys Division I Playoff Bracket
Boys Division I
1. Mercer Island (13-0-0 / 16-4-0) The four-time state champion Islanders have made it to the state championship game in seven of the last eight years missing only in 2008… the Islanders have the league’s second leading offense, outscoring their opponents 248 to 119 during the regular season… leading scorer is senior attackman Daniel Shields (second team All-State in 2008) with 36 goals, and 36 assists and 29 ground balls… goaltender Tucker Vassau leads the league with a 78 percent save percentage… Lacrosse at Mercer Island High School, which began play in 1993, is supported by the athletic department… Mercer Island is coached by Ian O’Hearn.
2. Issaquah (12-1-0 /16-2-0) The defending state champion Eagles have made it to the state title game in three of the last four years missing only in 2007… Issaquah is regarded as the league’s most prolific offense having outscored its opponent 227 to 82 during the regular season… leading scorer is senior midfielder Jordan Goldstein with 34 goals, 5 assists and 15 ground balls… Jake Director (senior midfield) and Connor McClain (LSM) were both second team All-State selections in 2008… Issaquah, which began play in 2002 is supported by its athletic department… Issaquah is coached by Brandon Fortier.

Bainbridge (11-2-0 / 13-3-0) Bainbridge Island High School is one of the most successful lacrosse programs in Washington state winning a combined 17 state titles between the boys and girls programs… the Spartan Boys Division I team was the 2008 state runner up and have been to the state championship game 14 times since 1991, winning the outright title 11 times including seven consecutive titles from 1994 – 2000… senior attackman Sam Snow leads the league in scoring with 47 goals, 21 assists and 47 ground balls… Snow was a first team All-State selection in 2008… the Spartans’ lacrosse program, which started play in 1989, is a club sport at Bainbridge Island High School... Bainbridge is coached by Jack Visco and Dejon Hush.

Bellevue (9-4-0 / 11-6-0) Bellevue has made it to the state title game 14 times and has walked away with the title seven times… The Wolverines were last in the state title game in 1992 where they lost to Bainbridge… the Wolverines are led by senior attackman Kyle Mutzel who is fourth in the league in scoring with 36 goals and 20 assists… Bellevue High School’s lacrosse program, which is supported by its athletic department, began play in 1980 and is the second oldest lacrosse program in the state… Bellevue is coached by John Baumann.

Northshore (8-5-0 / 11-5-0) Northshore won the Division II state championship in 2008 and has moved into the more competitive Division I in 2009… junior midfielder Taylor Wisman, an All-Northeast Regional Team selection in 2008, is the league’s second leading scorer with 42 goals and 18 assists… Wisman collected 100 ground balls during the regular season… the club began play in 2007 and is the prototypical upstart lacrosse program as it draws student-athletes from multiple high schools; Inglemoor, Bothell and Woodinville High Schools… Northshore is coached by Steve Wisman.

SEATTLE – The road to the 31st annual Washington Lacrosse Boys State Championships begins Thursday for the state’s top eight boys Division I high school lacrosse teams as they square-off in quarter-final playoff action. Division II playoff action also continues on Thursday with quarter-finals.
In Thursday’s Division I quarter-finals, Northshore takes on Bainbridge at 7 p.m. at Bainbridge Stadium. Sixth place Northshore, which finished the season 8-5-0 in league play and 11-5-0 overall after winning last year’s Division II state title, takes on #3 Bainbridge. The Spartans, who finished as runner-up in last year’s state championship, finished the season 11-2-0 in league play and 13-3-0 overall.
In Division II quarter-final action, Tacoma takes on Redmond in a 7 p.m. game at Redmond High School, Stadium visits Eastside Catholic in a 7 p.m. game at Eastside Catholic High School in Sammamish and Overlake takes on Mukilteo in a 7:15 p.m. game at Kamiak High School in Mukilteo.
Division I quarter-final action continues on Friday, May 22 with Vashon visiting Mercer Island at Mercer Island High School and Skyline visiting Issaquah at Issaquah High School. Both games get under way at 7 p.m. Bellevue takes on Curtis in an 8 p.m. start at Curtis High School.
In Division II quarter-final action Lake Tapps visits King’s Way and Columbia River High School in Vancouver, Wash. The game gets underway at 7 p.m.

Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the U.S. and in Washington State the sport has seen double-digit growth in five of the last seven years. In 2009, over 2,370 high school students representing 75 boys and 49 girls varsity and junior varsity teams in Washington state will compete in a nine-week season March – May with the annual Washington State High School Championships taking place May 16 (girls) and May 30 (boys). SAMMAMISH, Wash. – Lucy Williams scored with 1:01 remaining in double overtime to give Lakeside its fourth consecutive Girls Division I Washington state high school lacrosse title in a 14 – 13 thriller over Bainbridge Island, Saturday at Charlie Acosta Field on the campus of the Eastside Catholic School in Sammamish, Wash.
The victory was the seventh overall Girls Division I state championship for the Lions, tying them with Bainbridge who had held the edge since 2002.
In a game that came down to a final possession, Lakeside emerged victorious, consistently recovering from a relentless Bainbridge team and holding the Spartans to just their second lowest-point output of the season.
The winning goal came with time winding down in the second overtime, as Williams caught a crisp Emmy Armintrout pass in front of the net and fired a shot past Spartan goaltender Josefine Wallace for the go-ahead goal. “Emmy told me, ‘Lucy, you need to get open’, so I made a cut and was lucky she made a great pass.” The goal was just the second of the afternoon for the Second-Team All-State senior.
In the first, a stingy Bainbridge defense kept Lakeside in check for most of the half, before consecutive yellow cards forced Spartans’ coach Tami Tommila to replace two top line defenders. With Spartan midfielders now defending, Lakeside connected for two goals in the final minute to take a 6 – 4 halftime lead.
In the second, the Lions again controlled the ball early, scoring three unanswered goals to take a 9 – 4 lead with 16 minutes remaining.
But Bainbridge rallied, scoring five unanswered goals over the next five minutes to knot the game at 9 – 9. “Coming back from a five-goal deficit was quite a momentum changer. I’m proud of my girls for doing that,” said Tommila.
Lakeside then took the lead three separate times in the remaining 8:35 of the game, but Bainbridge responded to each with goals of their own including Jaclyn Biggers’ score on a free-possession shot with just 23 seconds remaining to force the overtime period.
“We knew this game was going down to one possession,” said Lakeside coach Jamie Asaka, who is in her fifth year at the helm of the Lions program. “The team that controls the game at the end and maintains possession was going to win it.” But the end never seemed to appear for the Lions.
In the first overtime, Lakeside’s Katrina Carlsen beat Wallace with just 44 seconds remaining, but Biggers again found the net, this time with just 5 seconds remaining, to force the second overtime. “At that point we needed to deny (Biggers) the ball,” said Asaka. “She’s very poised and has a great stick and great shot.”
In the second extra period, Lakeside won the opening draw and controlled play for most of the period before connecting for the game winner.
Morgan Merriman and Sarah Pollnow had three goals and Sarah Adler had 13 saves in goal for the Lions. In the loss Mariah Walk scored five for Bainbridge.

SAMMAMISH, Wash. -- Loreal Camp scored five goals and collected six ground balls to lead Mercer Island to a 14 – 8 win over Issaquah for the Islander’s first varsity girls state lacrosse championship, Saturday at Charlie Acosta Field on the campus of the Eastside Catholic School in Sammamish, Wash.
The Islander defense held Issaquah and the league’s second leading scorer Katie Mincin in check for most of the game to set the stage for its 14-goal blitz. Mincin, who averaged just over six goals per game in the regular season, beat Islander goaltender Helen Hansen just three times.
Mercer Island got down to business early as Camp took possession of a ground ball and drove deep into the Issaquah zone for the first of five unanswered goals by the Islanders. Issaquah finally got on the board with just 31 seconds remaining in the half to make it 5 – 1 at the intermission.
“We wanted to start the game fast and control the pace,” said Islander coach Tony D’Alessio, whose team launched 16 shots on Issaquah goaltender Teagan Cameron in the first half.
In the second, the Islanders again put the pressure on Cameron, as Camp grabbed the opening draw and marched in for the first of a four-goal Islander run to open the half.
“They’re hard to defend, it’s just tough to chase Loreal (Camp) and Sarah (Drucker) around the field,” said Issaquah midfielder Brittany Hogan.
At the mid-way point of the half, Issaquah finally took the Islanders off their game, scoring on five of eight shot attempts over the next six minutes to establish momentum.
“We got on a run. There was a drive to win,” said Hogan who had two of Issaquah’s five unanswered goals. The effort closed the gap to 11 – 7. But the Islanders held, netting three of the final four for a 9-goal half and the victory.
“My defense saved this game for me,” said MI goaltender Helen Hansen who recorded 25 saves – 17 in the second half. “They should get all of the credit.”

In Friday’s opening round, Overlake rolled past Three Rivers 15 – 4, while Eastside Catholic downed Blanchet 13 – 10 and King’s Way ousted Stanwood 10 – 4.
Boy’s Division II opening round playoff action continues on Saturday with five games, while the 17th annual girls state championships take place at the Eastside Catholic School in Sammamish. The Girls Division II championship game between Issaquah and Mercer Island gets underway at 11 a.m., while the Division I rematch of last year’s state title game with Bainbridge Island and Lakeside gets underway at 2:00 p.m.

Team-by-team preview of Washington state's Division II boys high school lacrosse teams in the 2009 state championships tournamement. State tournament play begins Friday, May 15. The Washington Boys Lacrosse State Championship games for Division I and II take place Saturday, May 30 at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.

31st annual boys state championships set for Saturday, May 30
SEATTLE – The road to the 31st annual Washington Lacrosse Boys State Championships begins today for the state’s top 16 boys Division II high school lacrosse teams as they square-off in opening round playoff action. Boys Division I playoff action gets underway next week.
In today’s opening round, Blanchet, the fourth-place team in the Evergreen Conference takes on Eastside Catholic. The Crusaders finished the season atop the Cascade Conference with a 12-0-0 league record and 14-1-0 overall. The game gets underway at 7:00 p.m. at the Eastside Catholic School in Sammamish.
Stanwood, which won its play-in game on Thursday, takes on Vancouver’s King’s Way. King’s Way finished the season at 12-0-0 in league play and 13-2-0 overall. The game gets underway at 7:00 p.m. at Vancouver’s Columbia High School.
Three Rivers, one of three eastern Washington teams competing in the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association, takes on Evergreen Conference champion Overlake, which finished the season at 11-1-0 in the league play and 12-2-0 overall. The game gets underway at 6:00 p.m. at the Overlake School in Redmond.
The remaining opening round games in Division II take place on Saturday, while Division I play gets underway next week. Boys Division II bracket.

Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the U.S. and in Washington State the sport has seen double-digit growth in five of the last seven years. In 2009, over 2,370 high school students representing 75 boys and 49 girls varsity and junior varsity teams in Washington state will compete in a nine-week season March – May with the annual Washington State High School Championships taking place May 16 (girls) and May 30 (boys). Varsity boys lacrosse is contested in the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association (http://www.whsbla.org/) with 14 Division I and 28 Division II teams. Varsity girls lacrosse is contested in The Washington Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association (http://www.wslax.org/) with 15 Division I and 16 Division II teams. Most of the teams represent high schools throughout the Puget Sound area.

Cascade Conference
1. Eastside Catholic (12-0-0 / 14-1-0) Just in their third year of play, the Crusaders are led by senior midfielder David Carleton who is sixth in the league in scoring with 42 goals and 27 assists. Carleton has collected 59 ground balls this season… the Crusaders, which began play in 2007, are supported by their school’s athletic department.
2. Lake Tapps (10-2-0 / 12-2-0) Lake Tapps is led by senior Corey Carson who platoons between the attack and midfield positions… Carson is sixth in league scoring with 32 goals and 24assists… Carson has also collected 60ground balls… The club began play in 2006 and draws student-athletes from the Auburn, Sumner, Enumclaw and White River school districts.
3. Three Rivers (7-5-0 / 9-6-0) The Tri-Cities club is in its inaugural year of play and one of three Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association programs in Eastern Washington… Three Rivers is led by senior midfielder CJ Larson with 26 goals and 3 assists… Larson has collected 65 ground balls… the club draws student-athletes from Richland, Kennewick, Pasco, South Richland and Kamiakin High Schools.
4. Sammamish (7-5-0 / 8-6-0) Sammamish is in its third year of play and is led by junior midfielder Chris Wenzel with 15 goals and 2 assists. The Sammamish club draws student-athletes from the International Community School and the Bear Creek School.
Evergreen Conference
1. Overlake (11-1-0 / 12-2-0) The Overlake School in Redmond is led by senior attackman George Dolack who is the league’s fifth leading scorer with 42 goals and 27 assists… in 2008, Dolack received an honorable mention to the state All-Region team… Devon Schmidt leads the league in ground balls with 145… The Owls, which began boys lacrosse play in 1989, are supported by their school’s athletic department.
2. Redmond (11-1-0 / 12-1-0) Redmond is led by senior attackman Hunter McDonald. As the league’s 10th leading scorer, McDonald has tallied 31 goals and 1 assist this season… Five Redmond players were selected to the All-Region team in 2008… the Redmond club, which draws student-athletes from Juanita, Lake Washington and Redmond High Schools, began play in 1990 as Lake Washington.
3. Snohomish (8-4-0 / 8-7-0) Snohomish is one of six lacrosse programs in North King, Snohomish and Skagit Counties… Snohomish is led by junior Nathan Wirtz, who platoons at the midfield and attack positions, with 19 goals and 7 assists… Wirtz has collected 106 ground balls… Snohomish, which began play in 2002, draws student-athletes from Snohomish, Marysville-Pilchuck, Monore, Lake Stevens and Glacier Peak High Schools.
4. Blanchet (6-6-0 / 7-6-0) Offensively, Bishop Blanchet High School is led by sophomore midfielder Dylan Evans with 31 goals and 19 assists… in 2008, as a freshman, Evans was among three Blanchet players named to the All-Region team… defensively, the Braves are led by senior midfielder Nick Kruse who has collected 41 ground balls… Blanchet, which began play in 2007, is supported by its athletic department.
Olympic Conference
1. King's Way (12-0-0 / 13-2-0) King’s Way School in Vancouver, Wash, is in just its second year of play… one of five programs in Eastern Washington, Southwest Washington and Skagit County to begin lacrosse play in the past two years… the Knights are led by sophomore attackman Zach Lindahl with 24 goals and 10 assists… Lindahl has collected 34 ground balls this season… King’s Way is supported by its school’s athletic department.
2. Stadium (9-3-0 / 10-3-0) Tacoma’s Stadium High School is led by senior midfielder Carter Chaffey with 30 goals and 6 assists… Chaffey has collected 59 ground balls this season… the Tigers began play in 2006 and are considered a club sport at their school.
3. Tacoma (8-4-0 / 9-5-0) Tacoma is led by senior attackman Bryce Johnson with 30 goals and 24 assists… Johnson has collected 45 ground balls this season… the Tacoma club, which began play in 2004, draws students from the Tacoma School District.
4. Klahowya (7-5-0 / 7-6-0) Located in Silverdale, Wash. the Eagles are led by senior midfielder Danny Zimny with 43 goals and 14assists… Zimny is second in the league in ground balls with 112… Zimny was named to the All-Region team in 2008… the Eagles lacrosse program, which began play in 2003, is supported by Klahowya’s athletic department.
Skagit Conference
1. Mukilteo (12-0-0 / 14-2-0) Mukilteo is led by the leagues eighth leading scorer, freshman midfielder Chas Stringfellow with 32 goals and 9 assists… Stringfellow has collected 38 ground balls this season… the Mukilteo club, which began play in 2003, draws student-athletes from the Mukilteo and Everett School Districts.
2. Lynnwood (8-4-0 / 11-5-0) In 2006, in just their second year of existence, the Lynwood club made it to the state Division II title game finishing as runner-up to Eastlake… Lynwood is led the league’s leading scorer, junior Trey Knowles with 45 goals and 15 assists… Knowles, who plays both attack and midfield, has collected 72 ground balls this season… sophomore Cameron Girgus, who platoons at attack and midfield, is the league’s fourth leading scorer with 42 goals, 35 assists and 65 ground balls… the Lynwood club, which began play in 2005, draws student-athletes from Edmonds and Shoreline School Districts.
3. San Juan (8-4-0 / 8-4-0) San Juan, located in Friday Harbor, is led by the league’s seventh leading scorer, Friday Harbor High School junior attackman Forest Dayton with 38 goals and 14 assists… Dayton has also collected 58 ground balls this season…San Juan, which began play in 2003, draws student-athletes from the Spring Street School and Friday Harbor High School.
4. Stanwood (6-6-0 / 6-6-0) Stanwood won its play-in game against Whatcom 10 – 3 to advance to the first round of the 2009 playoffs.. Stanwood is led by Stanwood High School senior Tucker Anderson who has produced 25 goals and 9 assists and 32 ground balls this season… Stanwood, which began play in 2005, draws from student-athletes at Stanwood, LaConner, Arlington and Lakewood High Schools.
