MERCER ISLAND, Wash. -- Daniel Shields scored the go-ahead goal at 9:55 of the fourth quarter to lift Mercer Island to sole possession of first place in Division I with a 6 – 4 boys lacrosse win over Issaquah, Friday evening at Islander Stadium on Mercer Island.

With the win over the defending state champions, the Islanders preserved their undefeated league record, advancing to 8-0-0 in league play and 10-4-0 overall. Issaquah dropped to second at 7-1-0 in league play and 9-2-0 overall.

The winning goal came at 9:51 of the final quarter, as Shields worked his way from behind the Issaquah cage and wrapped a quick shot past Eagles goaltender Cameron Danforth for his third score of the night.

“We knew that Issaquah was coming hard. They’re patient and have great ball movement. If you look away, they’re gone – straight behind you,” said Shields, whose fourth goal at 6:25 of the fourth secured the win for the Islanders. The goal gave him 26 on the season, just two behind the league leader, Sam Snow of Bainbridge Island. “This feels great. We needed this game,” he said.

Shields got scoring underway just 47 seconds into the game after the Islanders won the opening draw and immediately marched into the Issaquah zone. Working from behind the net, Shields curled around the front of the cage firing the game’s first shot past Danforth.

Just 67 seconds later, Issaquah’s Jordan Goldstein connected on the first of a three-goal Issaquah run to knot the game at one goal apiece.

Jake Director and Todd Jones then added goals to put the Eagles up 3 – 1 before Shields connected a second time with just 34 seconds left in the quarter to bring the Islanders within one.

In the second, the Islanders’ physical play and defense shut down Issaquah’s scoring threat. Despite several well executed possessions with crisp passing around the Islanders cage, the Eagles failed to put a shot past Islander goaltender Hap Giraud. The defensive effort set the stage for MI’s lone goal in the quarter. With 47 seconds remaining, Islander midfielder Steven Caditz converted on a Steven Taylor pass to even the game at three going into the intermission.

“MI did a great job defensively,” said Goldstein who scored two of for Eagles goals in the game. “If you hold a good team like Mercer Island to six goals you need to produce offensively. We just didn’t finish well tonight.”

In the third, with the Eagles playing one man up after MI’s Travis Leung was flagged for a penalty, Goldstein again found the net at 6:34 to put Eagles in the lead 4 – 3 and seemingly in control of their own destiny.

However, Issaquah couldn’t hold the lead as Caditz netted the Islanders’ fourth and tying goal at 5:41, setting the stage for the Islanders in the fourth.

SEATTLE -- Hector Rhodes found the net with just 9-seconds left in overtime to give Lakeside a 10 – 9 Boys Division I lacrosse win over Eastlake, Wednesday at The Lakeside School in north Seattle.

Rhodes’ behind-the-back goal avenged a loss earlier in the week to Issaquah and gave the Lions their third win of the season, keeping them alive for a spot in May’s state tournament.

With Lakeside holding on to a one goal advantage as the clock ticked down in the final minutes of regulation, Eastlake’s Pat Keogh beat Lakeside goaltender Nick Canino to send the game into overtime.

In sudden death, both Eastlake and Lakeside had chance after chance to score, but neither could get the ball into the cage.

In the final minute, Lions midfielder Sten Jernudd threw a pass across the restraining box to Rhodes, who scampered 20 yards down the left side in a race against the clock. At the left side of the cage, with an Eastlake defender forcing him past the goal line extended and losing his angle on the goal with every additional step, Rhodes whipped a shot around his back, beating Eastlake’s Trevor Olson for the game-winning goal. The goal was the 14th on the season for Rhodes.

“That was the exact time to use that move,” said Lakeside coach Jeff Pattison, describing how Rhodes’ choice of an unorthodox move set up an angular advantage on the goal. “In that situation it wasn’t a showy move – it was a good player finding a good opportunity for a score.”

With the win, Lakeside advanced to 3-6-0, while Eastlake dropped to 0-7-0

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. -- Merielle Moffatt scored a season high 10 goals as Bellevue blasted past Curtis 20 – 12 in Girls Division I lacrosse action, Wednesday at Curtis High School near Tacoma.

With the win, the Wolverines advanced to 3-5-1 on the season, hanging on to the eighth and final playoff spot in Division I play. Moffatt’s scoring binge shot her into the top 10 scoring leaders among Division I girls for the first time this season with 33 goals.

Bellevue got on the board early with Moffatt converting a Molly Boyd feed for the game’s first goal at 23:26 of the first half. Following a Rebecca Constantine score for the Wolverines less than a minute later, Moffatt again found the net at 21:35, this time unassisted, to give Bellevue the early 3 – 0 lead.

However, Curtis came roaring back, scoring four of the next five goals over the next eight and a half minutes to tie the game at four goals apiece.

But where the middle of the first half belonged to Curtis, the final seven minutes belonged to Bellevue as crisp passes and aggressive defense helped the Wolverines score seven of the final eight goals of the half, including two each by Rebecca Constantine and Reily Finnelly, to take an 11 – 5 lead into the intermission.

In the second half, Bellevue’s Adrienne Greenberg tallied the first goal at 22:54 to stretch the Wolverines’ lead to seven goals. Despite playing down a player for the final 17:30 of the game as Curtis was unable to field enough reserve players to fill in for injuries, the Vikings hung with the Wolverines, scoring seven of their own goals to Bellevue’s nine in the second half.

ISSAQUAH, Wash. – Todd Jones scored four goals as Issaquah recorded their seventh straight league victory in a 15 - 1 Boys Division I lacrosse defeat of Lakeside, Tuesday at Issaquah High School. With the win, the Eagles jumped past Mercer Island for sole possession of first place.

From the opening draw, the Issaquah pressured Lakeside relentlessly, swarming to nearly every ground ball. Senior Connor McClain led the way for the Eagles, collecting 11 ground balls on the night lifting his season total to a league leading 52. His sound defensive work gave the Eagle offense an opportunity to pepper Lakeside goaltender Nick Canino with shot after shot.

A total of nine Issaquah players scored in the win with Jones finding the net first, converting on a strong Jordan Goldstein pass at 9:18 of the opening quarter to take an early 1-0 lead. Throughout the quarter, the Eagles beat the Lions with speed and sound stick skills, eventually scoring three more times to go up 4 – 0.

In the second, Jones again opened scoring converting midfielder Jake Director pass to a goal at 10:19 of the quarter. Following a Director goal just 47 seconds later, Jones connected for his third score of the night at 8:37. The Eagles found the net once more on a Nate Bean goal to take a comfortable 8 – 0 lead into the intermission.

“The most important thing about this win, was to have more than a few weapons,” said Jones, who had only eight goals on the season coming into the game, five of which came in the Eagles early April defeat of Mukilteo. “I went back to finishing well. Goldstein, Director and Goodman helped so much in getting me looks.”

In the second half, Issaquah again scored first, finding the net at 8:23 of third, before Lakeside junior attackman Hector Rhodes converted a David Jameison pass into the Lions’ only goal of the night.

“We tried our hardest and got outrun every step of the game,” said Rhodes, who leads the now 2-6-0 Lions in scoring with 14 goals on the season.

The Eagles went on to score three more in the third, including Jones’ fourth goal, and another three in the final stanza to close out the game.

On Friday, Issaquah will battle Mercer Island, who is also undefeated in league play at 6-0-0. The game gets underway at 8 p.m. at Mercer Island High School Stadium.

SEATTLE – Angie Anderson scored six goals to power Roosevelt to a 24 – 14 Girls Division I high school lacrosse win over Bellevue, Monday at Seattle’s Magnuson Park.

With the win, the high scoring Roughriders advanced to 6-1-1 in league play, passing Holy Names for sole ownership of third place.

The six-goal performance was a season high for Anderson, who scored four in Friday’s defeat of Overlake. But it was the crisp passing and skilled ball control of her teammates that the junior center credited with the pivotal win.

“We were connecting really well today. We were on it,” said Anderson, who also had 10 draw controls setting the stage for Roosevelt's skilled play on offense. “Olivia (Hull) and Madeline (Grose) played well. Olivia was seeing the open player and getting it there and Nicole Nevin was making the open cuts.” Grose had five goals and four assists.

Roosevelt took charge of the Bellevue early on, getting on the board just 1 minute, 24 seconds into the game on a goal by Hull for the first of her five goals on the night.

Following a Merielle Moffatt goal by Bellevue just 15 seconds later, Roosevelt went on to score seven of the next nine goals to grab an early 8 – 3 lead. The goal was the first of five for Moffatt.

For the remainder of the half, Bellevue twice closed the gap to a three-goal margin, but was never able to shake a dominant Roosevelt offense, as the Roughriders built an 11 – 7 advantage by the intermission.

In the second, Roosevelt again found the net early and often, scoring three goals in the first three and a half minutes of play to increase their lead to 14 – 7.

But with Bellevue mounting a second-half challenge, netting four of the next six goals, Emily Lee was dealt a yellow card forcing the Wolverines to play short handed.
Roosevelt’s Hull, taking advantage of the situation, connected again at 15:53 for the first of a five goal Roughrider run that drove the score to 21 – 11 and put the game out of reach.

Roosevelt’s, Rissa Andersen had 14 saves in the win, while Bellevue’s Taylor Blackbourne had eight saves.

Scoring
Bellevue 7 7 -- 14

MERCER ISLAND, Wash. – Mercer Island’s Dan Shields scored the game-winning goal just 33 seconds into the second overtime to boost the Islanders to a 7 – 6 Boys Division I high school lacrosse upset win over undefeated Bainbridge Island, Saturday before an estimated crowd of 1,500 at Islander Stadium on Mercer Island.

Shields, who led all scorers with four goals, emerged as the game’s undisputed hero, netting the fourth quarter’s only goal at 7:35 left in regulation to send the game into overtime.

After playing to a dead-heat in the first sudden death period, Shields took a pass at 3:27 of the second overtime from his brother Matt, who had just picked up his own rebound after hitting the post. His shot beat Spartan goaltender Bryce Stevenson on the off-stick side for the game winner. The goal unleashed the near capacity crowd onto the field in celebration.

“I saw the ball bounce off the post. When I got the ball, the goalie was out of step so I threw it,” said Shields, a second-team All-State selection in 2008 who entered the game as the Division I points leader with 16 goals and 16 assists. “I’ve never had a game winner like that – nothing this big. This will give us a real confident run for the rest of the season.”

Both teams entered the game undefeated in league play, only Mercer Island had non-league losses – all dealt on a four-game spring break road swing through New York. The win advanced the Islanders to 6-0-0 in league play, 8-4-0 overall, for a share of first place with Issaquah in Division I play. The win was the first for the Islanders in three years over Bainbridge.

In the first quarter, the Bainbridge struck first on a goal by Sam Snow at 9:11. The Spartans went on to score three unanswered goals over the next 1 minute, 56 seconds before Shields finally put the Islander on the board with just 1:09 left in the quarter.

In the second, Bainbridge again connected first on a solo-shot by Jordan Wagner. The score was followed by MI goals by Jon Wettack and Shields, but still sent the Islanders into the intermission down 3 – 5.

In the third, Mercer Island fought back to tie the game on goals by Wettack at 3:36 and then Steve Caditz with just 15 seconds remaining. But with just one second to go, Kevin Nguyen beat Islander goaltender Hap Giraud to put the Spartans back up by one.

The fourth remained scoreless until the 7:35 mark when Shields drove from outside of the crease to fire a shot over the right shoulder of Stevenson to knot the game at six goals apiece.

“This is the first opportunity to prove ourselves in the state,” said Mercer Island senior Conner Beckwith who had six ground balls for the Islanders. “It’s been two years since we’ve won this game.”

Islander goaltender Hap Giraud had 15 saves in the win. Bainbridge’s Stevenson had 11 saves in the loss.

The Bainbridge, Mercer Island rivalry dates back 17 years and is one of the most heated lacrosse contests in the state. Since 2001, both teams have faced each other in the state championship five times and at least one of the schools has been involved in the state title game each of the past 18 years.
